First of all, on the economic level, urbanization has allowed the creation of department stores, such as the store “Au Bonheur des Dames” in the heart of the new Paris of Haussman. Then, on the cultural level, many operas, boulevards and squares are created, as we can see on the map, by clicking here. From a social point of view, the construction of railways, steamboats and railway stations, makes travel cheaper, easier and shorter; communication is easier, using the radio, telegraph etc
In conclusion, urbanization is a direct consequence of industrialization. It began with the rural exodus of peasants who thought they could find better work in newly created industries in cities. More people had job, workers had, at first, higher wages and urban class doubled, tripled, or quadrupled in size. However, this urban sprawl and the improvement of living standards are followed by heavy pollution, poor waste congestion, increasingly common diseases caused by sewers and air pollution, such as atheism in children; a lack of security and education and increased differences and conflicts between patricians and plebians, among others.
With urbaninsation, several philosophical ideas emerged. This is the case of Thomas Malthus and the Malthussian theory, which argued that population tended to increase more rapidly than food supply. According to him, without wars and epidemics to kill the extra people, most were destinated to be poor and miserable.
