HOW A DYSTOPIAN FILM COULD DENOUNCE THE CURRENT SITUATION OF OUR ACTUAL SOCIAL SYSTEM,?
The platform
- The platform, 2019
- By Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia
- Spanish Horror Thriller
- About a prison composed of 333 floors/ two per floors = 666 prisoners
- Vertical system
- A food platform goes from floor to floor everyday / until reaching the lowest level
- Problematic : Which aspects of this film show that this film is actually a dystopian one?
About the film:
- No truly good evil / No holy good hero
"Hunger unleahses that madman in us . It's better to eat than be eaten" Goreng
- Hunger / Violence / Crimes (cannibalism)
"There are three types of people : those at the top, those at the bottom and those who fall" - Trimigasi
- Crual system : prisoners are unfairly distributed into the floors
- System divided into social classes : the privileged and the poorest
- However, they can't choose the social class they're born into !
1. Inequalities between different social classes
- Prison based entirely on the current political and social system = social self-criticism
- As said Imoguiri : "If everyone ate only what they needed, the food would reach the lowest levels." = no pity
Those who beat up other social classes Ex = Goreng
The poorest who fight to liveEx = Trimigasi
The privileged on the first floors
Representation of social classes through a caricature of capitalism
"some quotes showing the cruelty of the system"
-Imoguiri
" Please follow my instructions, because there are people dying beneath your feet. Do you understand me? People are dying "
- Baharat
"I'm on Level Seven, and I'm entitled to stuff my face. I nearly died last month on Level 114. Where were you then, you bastards?"
-Trimigasi
" Don't speak to the people below...because they're down below. The people above won't answer you...because they're above, obviously."
As said Goreng : "We don't know where we'll be tomorrow".
Symbol of hope in a cruel world
- Send a message to the "aristocracy" = a little girl is chosen = symbole of purity
- Child = represents future generation : power / not corrupted even if she is at the lowest level of society
- The child and her mother = immigrants = it is difficult to fit in our actual society
- Goreng = Don Quixote - tall, thin with messy brown hair and a mustache
- They want to serve their community and change society's values but both failed
- Quixotic means idealistic / impossible
- Finally, "the platform" is a dystopian film which reflects our actual society, that's why there is no end to the film
- There is no answer / no solution
