Games similar to soccer can be traced back to the 2nd Century BC in China. Other soccer like games were also played in Greece, Rome, and among Native Americans. Soccer, in the modern era, began in England in the mid 1800's. Of course, it is known as football in Europe. The first set of written rules were created in 1845 and were used in competitions throughout England. The game quickly made it to North America and was played between several universities. It would eventually become a professional sport and would be part of the Olympics starting in 1900.
