High school is a time to ask questions and get to know who you are and who you want to become. It is not unusual to struggle with uncertainty, but there is no reward without hard work. The key is to learn who you are as a person and as a learner. Over time, you will learn the strategies to manage and overcome these challenges. It may be hard work, but in the end you will be better prepared to achieve success. High school doesn't last forever. Embrace what is has to offer. Don’t be scared to try new things. Make mistakes and learn from them. Most of all, be the best you that you can be. At Thornlea, we are partners on this journey. Although this year will look like no other in your educational career, we are in this together!
Q: Do I have to take Learning Strategies every year? A: No. Each year focuses on specific topics so you may decide that you don’t need to take it all 4 years of high school. Q: How will I know who my SERT is and where do I find them? A: If you have Learning Strategies, that teacher is usually your SERT for the year. They will tell you the best place to find them. If you don't take Learning Strategies, your SERT will connect with you to introduce themselves and give you paperwork. You can always come to the Resource Room (room 214) to speak with a member of the Special Education department. Q: How do I get help? A: You are encouraged to speak to your SERT. You may have an extra adult in your class (a resource teacher or EA) so you can always ask them for help. You can ask your classroom teacher who can reach out to your SERT. You can ask to go to room 214 after the lesson is done in your class. The resource room is open before the first bell until after school. We are open at lunch almost everyday, so bring your lunch and your work. You are always welcome! Q: How does my IEP work? A: If you are coming from a YRDSB school and are new to Thornlea, your IEP automatically transfers over. While your SERT updates it, teachers still have access to your old IEP so that they know what accommodations to provide you. If you are new to YRDSB, you should speak with the Department Head of Special Education to find out the process for transferring your IEP. IEPs are updated each year. Classroom teachers have access to all of their student's IEPs so you do not need to provide them with a copy.
