News for Parents

Viking Library Newsletter

The holiday fun was more than just decorations. Several English teachers brought their classes in for a Breakout EDU challenge about five different holidays around the world. While difficult, many groups succeeded and learned a lot along the way.

Did you hear about the book tree designed by the Vanston library aides? It was a delight all season. National History Day projects brought students to the library for help with searching on databases for both primary and secondary sources. Visits to classrooms also helped them understand how to create and format an annotated bibliography.

What's been going on? A lot!

Around the library lately

Is your student into a good thriller? Have them join the Page Turners on Google Meet with code page every Tuesday AND Wednesday from 7:55-8:15 as we read Time Bomb together and discuss.

New Year, New Books

Is your student looking for more reading material? Then have them look online or stop by the library for more than 200 new titles that just arrived. Many are now on display in the library and featured online as well for easy searching. Not sure they know what to pick? Have them stop by the library to discuss book options with me for suggestions for what they may enjoy. There's a good book out there for everyone!

The Holiday Book Drive helped us collect more than 150 books for Shands Elementray students. Thank you to all who contributed and encouraged your students to help as well.

Located in the Library: Images & Music folder, this database allows them to see a broader image selection with their searches. Plus they can download right to their Google Drive from the database.

Students love searching for images just using Google, but they do not always have permission to use them, or know how to cite them. Try having them use Britannica Image Quest for free images that have the credit information included with the photo.

Is your student tracking the pages they read in Read Squared? They should be! There are competitions to read the most pages in summer, fall, and spring. Have them track them every time they read.

Read Squared

Is your student virtual but would like books from the Vanston Library? No problem! Have them access the catalog online, place a hold, and an email will be sent to them and their parent to pick up the book in the front office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
