LA CATEDRAL DE BARCELONA

  • The Cathedral of Barcelona has always been known as a cathedral of the people and since the city has existed, it has been a place to celebrate religious ceremonies. It is said that at the time when the city was known as Barcino and was under the rule of the Roman Empire, a 13-year-old girl named Eulalia was persecuted for her Christian beliefs. The story goes that the Romans put the girl in a barrel and threw her down the street known as the "Cuesta de Santa Eulalia" (Baixada de Santa Eulàlia), next to the Cathedral. After being subjected to terrible torture, the girl became a martyr and was buried in 300 AD. where today is the basilica of Santa María del Mar.
  • Construction began on the magnificent Gothic Cathedral of Barcelona on May 1, 1298, on the previous Romanesque temple. The works went through three stages during 150 years.
  • The Cathedral, located in the Gothic neighborhood receives, annually, the visit of three million people. She is very beautiful. Anyone can see the beauty of Gothic art, the splendid Gothic and Baroque altarpieces, the marvel of the choir, the baptistery and the tomb of Santa Eulalia.
