Telescopes
The invention of the telescope played an important role in advancing our understanding of Earth's place in the cosmos. The telescope emerged from a tradition of craftsmanship and technical innovation around spectacles and developments in the science of optics traced back through Roger Bacon and a series of Islamic scientists, in particular Al-Kindi , Ibn Sahl and Ibn al-Haytham .
Telescopes work by using curved mirrors to gather and focus light from the night sky. The bigger the mirrors or lenses, the more light the telescope can gather. Light is then concentrated by the shape of the optics. That light is what we see when we look into the telescope.
The first telescopes were created in the Netherlands in 1608 by Hans Lippershey
TIMELINE
2024/2025
The European Extremely Large Telescope is scheduled to be completed. It will be the largest telescope ever constructed.
1789
William Herschel builds the largest telescope of the 18th Century. It was a giant reflector with a mirror that was 49 inches wide
1616
Niccolo Zucchi constructs the first reflecting telescope
1609
Galileo Galilei makes a refractor telescope and turns it to the skies
1608
First telescope was made by Hans Lippershey
The James Webb Space Telescope will be the world's most important space science observatory when it launches in 2021. Webb will solve mysteries in our solar system, look beyond to distant worlds around other stars, and explore the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it
most advanced telescope: James Webb Space Telescope
I think that in the future, developed and advanced telescopes will be created that will allow us to see and discover not only planets close to us, but galaxies far far away
