You will be expected to carry out all of these duties within your role

You may be required to support individuals to apply some creams or ointments, whether they be moisturisers or medicated creams this is something you will need to be accustomed to within your role. Some individuals may require differing levels of support with elements of their personal hygiene routines. Some examples might be hair brushing, cutting nails, shaving.Unlike in the image, you would be expected to wear gloves (and any other relevant PPE in the current climate)

Some individuals may not be mobile enough for you to support them to take a bath or a shower. If this is the case, it will be documented in their care plan that the individual requires a 'bed bath' - where the individual is washed in their bed. Depending on the person's ability, they may be able to assist you in some way. You will be shown how to provide someone a bed bath correctly and you will be made aware through the individual's care plan.You would be expected to wear gloves (and any other relevant PPE in the current climate)

Some individuals may be required to wear incontinence pads for various reasons. This will have been decided to encourage their independence as much as possible. It is essential that dignity is considered even more-so in these instances as this can be a sensitive topic for some. You will be expected to remove any soiled pads as per internal infection control policy & procedure and you will instructed on how to apply and dispose of the pads, in line with the individual's preferences and needs. It is important individuals are given all the support they need, however unpleasant it may seem for any party. Avoiding such tasks or not doing a good job could be considered neglect. There may be individuals you support who require you to brush their teeth for them. This is usually monitored by the individual's dentist as you would expect. You will be shown how best to approach this task, based on the individual's preferences and needs. Some individuals may need varying levels of support around their showering, whether it be prompting particular aspects of the activity, or physically supporting with hair and/or body washing, and drying. Some individuals may require support with their toileting. This could vary from prompting the activity based on monitoring, to physically supporting individuals onto an adapted toilet aid or supporting an individual to clean themselves after relieving themselves. You will be instructed on how to best achieve the required task based on the individual's preferences and needs, considering the environment too, as often bathrooms can be smaller spaces. It is important individuals are given all the support they need, however unpleasant it may seem for any party. Avoiding such tasks or not doing a good job could be considered neglect. You would be expected to wear gloves (and any other relevant PPE in the current climate)

Some individuals may be prone to regular sickness due to medication for example. if this is the case, it will be noted in their care plan and expected. Of course, we can all get ill. As part of your role you will be expected to support illness - if it occurs during your visit, or have been informed of ongoing illness - in a manner that is appropriate to the situation. Your priority will be ensuring the physical and mental wellbeing of the individual and this will include ensuring their environment is clean, tidy and safe. There may be instances where other bodily fluids are required to be cleaned up. Again, it is important to remember that your priority is to the physical and mental health of the individual you are supporting, and this includes a safe, clean & tidy environment. It is important individuals are given all the support they need, however unpleasant it may seem for any party. Avoiding such tasks or not doing a good job could be considered neglect. You will be expected to follow protocol to report any unexpected changes to physical or mental health. You will be instructed on how to report effectively. You would be expected to wear gloves (and any other relevant PPE in the current climate)
