Climate change

The key indicators of climate change have changed in Earth's recent history.

Climate change is one of the most serious world challenges today. Our planet is experiencing significant and accelerated climate change that began over a century ago. For example, the Arctic has become warmer over the last 60 years and could be ice-free in summer by 2040. The planet is warming up faster than ever because of the vast amount of greenhouse gases that humans are pumping into the atmosphere. This includes activities such as burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), driving cars and cutting down forests. The average temperature of the Earth’s surface could rise by 4 °C or more above pre industrial levels before the end of this century if we don’t take urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Every 6 or 7 years, an important scientific body called the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) releases a report on scientific evidence on climate change.

Climate change is having a big impact on the world’s oceans. Oceans have absorbed more than 90 % of the additional heat from atmospheric changes caused by our activities over the past 40 years. Species like fish, shrimp, whales and plankton (tiny organisms eaten by fish) respond to the warmer water by migrating towards the poles where it is cooler. Coral reefs, which are home to over 25 % of all marine life and where many fish breed, also struggle to survive when the water gets too warm. The oceans absorb around a quarter of the carbon dioxide we release every year, and rising levels of CO2 mean greater amounts of the gas being stored in the seas. This helps to regulate the climate but is changing the chemical balance in the oceans. The waters are becoming more acidic, which is harmful to marine life. https://media.giphy.com/media/xUOwG1GXJvJlajETMk/giphy.gif

When sunlight hits the Earth’s surface, some of this energy is absorbed and warms the ground and the oceans. The rest of the energy can escape back into space, but some of it is trapped in the atmosphere and warms the Earth. This is called the 'greenhouse effect', because the atmosphere acts like the glass in a greenhouse – warming the inside. This greenhouse effect happens because the Earth's atmosphere contains gases such as water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide (these are called greenhouse gases). The greenhouse effect is what normally keeps our planet at a comfortable temperature. However, human activities (e.g. burning fossil fuels to produce energy, cutting down rainforests, agriculture, the production of chemicals...) are increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which makes the greenhouse effect stronger and increases the temperature of the Earth (global warming).

Carbon is everywhere and in all living things. It is constantly moving from one part of the planet to another and changing form. For example, carbon exists in the air mainly as a gas (carbon dioxide, or CO2) which is absorbed by plants, trees and the oceans. On land, animals, including us, take in carbon when they eat plants and breathe it out during respiration. When plants and animals die, their remains decay and decompose, creating carbon which is absorbed back into the Earth. The carbon cycle has kept the proportion of the gas in the atmosphere stable for thousands of years. However, this fine balance is being upset by human activities that either release CO2 faster than it can be removed naturally, or reduce natural stores of carbon (such as through deforestation of tropical rainforests). This increases the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and it causes the Earth's temperature to increase.

DID YOU KNOW? Global warming describes the current rise in the Earth’s temperature and is just one feature of climate change. Climate change refers to the many different effects of global warming on the Earth’s climate system including: - rising sea levels - melting glaciers - changing rainfall patterns - increased frequency of extreme weather (such as floods, storms and heatwaves) - changing lengths of seasons and changing crop yields

https://learningapps.org/watch?v=pb0br4qct21

DID YOU KNOW? Fossil fuels are the remains of ancient plants and animals buried deep in the ground for millions of years that have turned into substances that can be used as fuels.

The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest

You can write a subtitle here

i

Click on the groups of birds to learn more about this amazing place.

The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests and comprises the largest and most biodiverse tract of tropical rainforest in the world, with an estimated 390 billion individual trees divided into 16,000 species. One in ten known species in the world lives in the Amazon rainforest. This is the largest collection of living plants and animal species in the world. The region hosts about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and about 2,000 birds and mammals. One in five of all bird species are found in the Amazon rainforest, and one in five of the fish species live in Amazonian rivers and streams.

The Amazon Rainforest (also known as Amazonia or the Amazon Jungle) is a moist broadleaf forest in the Amazon biome, covering most of the Amazon basin of South America. This basin encompasses 7,000,000 km2, of which 5,500,000 km2 are covered by the rainforest. via GIPHY The majority of the forest is contained within Brazil, with 60% of the rainforest, followed by Peru with 13%, Colombia with 10%, and with minor amounts in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

More than 56% of the dust fertilizing the Amazon rainforest comes from the Bodélé depression in Northern Chad in the Sahara desert. The dust contains phosphorus, important for plant growth. The yearly Sahara dust replaces the equivalent amount of phosphorus washed away yearly in Amazon soil from rains and floods. NASA's CALIPSO satellite has measured the amount of dust transported by wind from the Sahara to the Amazon: an average 182 million tons of dust are windblown out of the Sahara each year, across 2,600 km over the Atlantic Ocean.

THE MAKING OF THE ESCAPE ROOM

Come abbiamo creato i giochi digitali?

Vi racconto il nostro progetto!

3E December 2020-April 2021

Do you need to interrupt your game? Before leaving, bookmark the page and next time you'll be able to continue from here!

Buona navigazione!!! Alice C.

Forests cover more than 30 percent of the Earth's land surface and are essential to maintaining biodiversity, protecting land and water resources, and mitigating climate change. Also, they supply about 40 percent of global renewable energy in the form of wood fuel.Significant progress has been made in international forest protection over the past 25 years but forests are still in danger because of commercial plantations, farming and infrastructure expansion.

Why do we need to stop plastic pollution in the ocean?

Every year, an estimated 5 to 12 million metric tonnes of plastic enters the ocean and this has a huge impact on our health and on the marine ecosystems. 80% of the waste that ends in the ocean comes from land-based activities (landfills, industries, storm drains, tourism, untreated water waste).
