Notice that the "0" mark is not on the end of the ruler. When measuring, be sure to not assume that the end of the ruler is zero. If the zero was set to the end of the instrument, it would be called a "rule" instead of a ruler.
This steel ruler measures in inches (English) and in millimeters (metric). Be sure to use the English units when measuring for this course.
The first 3" measure down to 1/32 of an inch, which is notated by a small 32 in this section.
The remaining inches on the steel ruler measure down to 1/16 of an inch, which is notated by a small 16 in this section.
Each vertical line is called a graduation. The graduation marks divide the instrument into specific equal sections.
Remember to take proper care of this instrument, by examining the steel ruler and reporting any damages, as well as being sure to wipe it down with instrument cleaning wipe at the end of class.
