The students from Croatia, Spain and Greece participating in the eTwinning project "eTwinners as Pros" researched the topics of printing and books and collected a series of events that marked the history of printing and books.

The history of the book starts with the development of writing, and various other inventions such as paper and printing, and continues through to the modern-day business of book printing.

3500 BC

The history of printing starts as early as 3500 BC, when the proto-Elamite and Sumerian civilizations used cylinder seals to certify documents written in clay. Other early forms include block seals, hammered coinage, pottery imprints, and cloth printing.

For centuries, books were engraved in planks or stones. In 1500 BC bamboo books were made. An indigenous plant in China, the bamboo, proves as convenient a writing material as papyrus in Egypt.the art of writing was invented.Source: www.historyworld.net

Woodblock printing was also used in Europe, but it was in the fifteenth century that European printers developed a process for mass-producing metal type to support an economical book publishing industry. This industry enabled the communication of ideas and sharing of knowledge on an unprecedented scale. Typography essentially began in the 15th century. with the invention of the flat press by Gutenberg. Johannes Gutenberg was a German blacksmith, goldsmith, printer and publisher who introduced printing to Europe. In 1455 he completed printing the Bible from movable type in Mainz, Germany.
