People make advent wreath and decorate their homes with ornaments

Advent is a period in Christian Culture from the fourth Sunday before Christmas till Christmas Eve

  • In Hungarian folklore there are some supertitions in connection with this day:
  • You shouldn't let your broom out or a witch can fly away with it.
  • You shouldn't lend or borrow anythings because it brings bad luck
  • Girls can predict who will be their future husbands
  • You shouldn't sew because hens won't give any eggs in the future

Before Christmas there is a nativity play at schools. In our school, the third graders perform this playevery year.

Nativity scene

  • The Christmas trees are decorated on 24th December.
  • Everyone put the presents under the tree and the gifts will be opened in the evening after the Christmas dinner.
  • In Hungary it is believed that not Santa but the Baby Jesus brings presents to the children.

Christmas Eve24th December

  • In our country there are some special sweets on the tree. We call them Szaloncukor.
  • It is some kind of chocolate, filled with different flavors, in beautiful wrappings.

The traditional Christmas dinner consists of fish soup, roast fish or roast turkey, stuffed cabbage and some sweets.
