EXPECTED BEHAVIOURAND NETIQUETTE
THE SUBJECT English Language III is a crucial subject in your program, since it offers you the opportunity to make progress from an intermediate level of linguistic competence to an upper-intermediate level, which is essential to meet any number of academic requirements in a variety of subjects in the advanced level.
THE VLE (VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT) Our Virtual Classroom's name is "Pathways to Autonomy," which sets the tone for the novel approach you will have to adopt and cultivate for the effective development of your linguistic competences. The VLE is an interactive environment where you will find a variety of resources and activities which complement, enhance, reinforce, and consolidate the knowledge you will be acquiring in a systematic and autonomous way. Be sure to become acquainted with its full potential from the beginning of the course and notice that there will not be a specific roadmap guiding you through this digital environment. Ideally, you should use the roadmap offered by the locks that display the basic topics and activities on the Calendar and then find the necessary complements to such topics and activities in the corresponding sections of your VLE. You should be able to administer the resources of our VLE in a sensible and independent way, by visiting it regularly not to miss out on important news and announcements. Likewise, use the self-monitoring and self-evaluation tools after you have studied the topics so as to capitalize on the instruments provided, adding breadth and depth to you knowledge through the materials in the repository of the VLE and the countless interactive practice opportunities. Each unit in the VLE contains one or more of the following sections:
- SYNCHRONOUS SESSIONS: This section will be a repository of any digital or paper-based support used during the course of teachers' video conferences and students' presentations. Recorded sessions will not be provided. Notice that the links to every event will be available directly from the CALENDAR OF TASKS AND EVENTS.
- CLASSES: This section will contain recorded lessons and teachers' packs which contain mostly theoretical material to develop or expand any particular topic.
- ACTIVITIES: This is the space where you will spend a lot of time carrying out a variety of practice activities for lexical awareness and enhancement, grammatical accuracy and the like. Most of the practice is interactive in nature.
- RESOURCES: This is where to look to get hold of all the required texts for the various parts of the subject (handbooks, answer keys, short stories, novels). All the materials are downloadable.
- FORUMS: Only a few special forums will be available from the individual unit and only for specific purposes and for a limited period of time. A case in point is the OWW Forum through which you will be able to consult your teachers about any doubts or concerns related to this project once it gets started. Other than this, there are two forums in the introductory section, i.e., one where teachers post news and announcements and a second one for students to address their teachers for specific enquiries.
THE CALENDAR OF TASKS AND EVENTS This Calendar of Tasks and Events will be your GPS throughout the first semester, which is why you will find yourself returning to it time and time again. The Calendar contains interactive features which will allow you to learn more about your work. To the left of every week of each month you will find lock icons. Clicking on them will display a suggestion to approach your study materials in a gradual way to maximize systematic learning. Inside the boxes of the Calendar you will find a variety of interactive icons, which will allow you to become aware of important events, such as deadlines for mandatory work, special video conferences delivered by your teachers, deadlines for participation in a variety of projects, and term tests. There is also an icon for important dates concerning our OWW (Online Writing Workshop). Notice that the icons also contain any necessary links to access the various events, though in the case of teachers' video conferences, such links will become available a few hours before the events. You will basically approach your study materials in an autonomous way. Following the recommendations given for TASKS and taking part in the EVENTS offered by the Chair will obviously be conducive to the expected development of the various aspects of your linguistic competences.
