Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

The name "Romania" comes from the Latin word "Romanus" which means "citizen of the Roman Empire."

It shares land borders with Bulgaria to the south, Ukraine to the north, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, and Moldova to the east and has its opening to the Black Sea.

Transylvania, one of the most mysterious parts of the world, hides many secrets and legends. The most famous of all is the story of Count Dracula.

About 88.9% of the people of Romania are ethnic Romanians, whose language, Romanian, is a Balkan Romance language, descended from Latin with some German, French, English, Greek, Slavic, and Hungarian borrowings. Romanians are by far the most numerous group of speakers of a Balkan Romance language today.

The culture of Romania is the product of its geography and its distinct historical evolution. It is theorized and speculated that Romanians and the Vlachs (Aromanians, Megleno-Romanians, and Istro-Romanians) are the combination of descendants of Roman colonists and people indigenous to the region who were Romanized.

The Romanian leu is the currency of Romania. It is subdivided into 100 bani a word that also means "money" in Romanian.

One of the most common meals is the mămăligă, the precursor of polenta, served on its own or as an accompaniment. Pork is the main meat used in Romanian cuisine, but also beef is consumed and a good lamb or fish dish is never to be refused.
