MISSION
INTRODUCTION
CHARACTERS
Today, Thanksgiving is a feast celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November. On this feast, Americans are thankful for everything they have, and they gather as a family to eat turkey and pies and give each other gifts. Many people think that this celebration comes from a feast organized by the English to thank the Native Americans of the Wampanoag tribe for their warm welcome and for all the knowledge they taught them, such as hunting and fishing. This celebration was also intended to give thanks to God for the good harvest season. This version of Thanksgiving is the best known, yet it is only a myth, it doesn't reflect reality. This is what we will discover through this game.

QUESTION 01
What Thanksgiving truly means to Native Americans ?
A given thanks
A feast to thank the Native Americans around a turkey
A real genocide, a massacre for the Amerindians
This celebration doesn't have as friendly a history as many believe. Quite the contrary: the origins of Thanksgiving are surrounded by stories of bloodshed, brutality and massacres. The Amerindians suffered from the arrival of the settlers. Indeed, their houses were destroyed, their way of life was completely changed and their community was massacred. Native descendants today remain convinced that this holiday is associated with a terrible massacre of Native Americans, while the vast majority of Americans see this November holiday as a celebration marking the union and friendship between settlers and Natives.

QUESTION 02
Why did the Pilgrims organize this feast?
In order to negotiate a treaty that would allocate land to the Pilgrims
To become friends with the Amerindians
To fatten us up (yes, we love to eat)
On the first day of Thanksgiving, the Wampanoag tribe was invited to negotiate a treaty and sell land to settlers. The settlers of Plymouth had a fairly good relationship with the Wampanoag tribe at first, but this friendship deteriorated. The main purpose of this friendship was only to enable the settlers to conquer land. Gradually, the settlers of Plymouth took possession of their land, making the Native American way of life difficult.

QUESTION 03
Why was the myth of Thanksgiving created and learned at school ?
Because reality was less cool
Because no one remembered the real story anymore
To bownd the nation and create a unity, a sense of belonging
The myth of Thanksgiving was created to bownd the nation and create a unity, a sense of belonging. It is also taught at school to students. However, it is not easy for the native descendants. This is difficult for them because they are forgotten in national commemorations. Indeed, most Americans think they are celebrating the union and gathering of Indians and the Pilgrims Fathers, when in reality they are celebrating the massacre of many men, women and children. Moreover, for school teachers which have Amerindian origin such as Chuck Larsen, it's hard for them to teach "traditional" Thanksgiving, because it meant telling their students something they didn't necessarily believe in.

QUESTION 04
In your opinion, is it important for me to make amends to the Amerindians?
NO, it doesn't concern you
YES, it's important
I DON'T CARE
Making amends is important in order to apologize to the Amerindians for the horrors of the past. Many people have made this gesture, such as Kevin Gover in 2000, Barack Obama in 2010 and more recently John Hickenlooper in 2014. These 3 characters have the same intention: to apologize for atrocities, mistreatments, massacres of native tribes and to commemorate the death of these people. This apology allows the American people to move forward as a united nation.
