Parts of a Conference

To help guide your research, we have an outline that you can make a copy of to fill out details about your country.

To better understand your country and its policies well, you need to research.

Research

Position Paper

- The Position Paper is a summary of your knowledge of your country's position toward a topic - 1-2 pages - 4 sections: Background of Topic, Past International Actions, Country Policy, and Possible Solutions - Usually due before a conference

outline

Should convey what your country stands for and its values

Should last from 1 minute to 1.5 minutes

States your specific country's policies regarding the particular topic of discussion

Opening Speech

Resolution

- Consists of issues and potential solutions- This is a statement of what the UN should do about a certain issue - Usually done during a conference, but practicing the writing style is beneficial

Awards

Members will have the opportunity to receive awards. These awards are completely optional, and you will still be able to participate in Model UN, even if you don't want to compete for awards. There are four different categories for awards.

At the end of each month we will update a spreadsheet including each member and the points they have earned. The totals will be added up, and the sheet will be ordered with the member with the most points at the top. If there is a tie, those members will occupy the same rank.

Members can earn points for various activities they participate in. The member with the most points at the end of the year will receive the Most Active Member Award. There will be one of these awards given. You can get points by completing various activities which each have their respective point values.

Most Active Member Award

Any time we have any speaking activities, we will evaluate how effective your speeches are. These speeches include opening speeches and impromptu speeches. There will be one of these awards given. You will be able to participate and speak in meetings, events, and conferences. For this year, these events will be primarily virtual.

Best Spoken Award

We will see how you interact with officers and other members. A member who is a positive and supportive member of our club will be more likely to receive the Member Spirit Award. There will be one of these awards given.

Given to the member who brings the most new members to the club. We will count each person you invite to the club on this spreadsheet.

Member Spirit Award

There will be four of these awards given (one for each grade).

This award will be awarded to a member from each grade (9, 10, 11, 12) who we feel embodies the purpose of the United Nations in making our community a better place. We will also consider the member's participation, speaking skills, and overall spirit. This award recipient will be chosen by the officers.
