Rib (Ribcage) Humans have a total of 24 ribs forming the ribcage. The primary duty of the ribcage is to enclose and protect the heart and lungs.

Stomach The stomach is essentially a container that holds food for the body's enzymes to convert this food into different usable forms for the body.

Spine (Backbone)The spine (backbone) plays the main role in supporting the body's overall flexibility, mobility, and weight. It also protects the spinal cord, which sends messages up and down the body.

Scapula (Shoulder Blade) This triangle-shaped bone connects the upper arm to the collarbone. The scapula helps stabilize and support movement of the shoulder region of the body.

Intestines This organ supports digestion, helps regulate the body's water balance, and fights germs.

Phalanges (Fingers & Toes) The phalanges are the bones that make up the fingers of the hand and the toes of the feet.

Lungs Lungs take in oxygen (breathing in) from the atmosphere and release carbon dioxide (breathing out) into the atmosphere.

Humans and whales have a lot in common! This is especially true when we take a closer look at systems in their bodies such as bones and organs. Instructions:

  1. Hover your mouse over the numbers to learn about the bones or organs the arrows are pointing to.
  2. Study the placement, structure, and shape of these bones and organs. You will try and match these same bones and organs on a whale's body on the next page.
  3. When ready, click the arrow on the top right of this page to test your knowledge.
