News for Parents

Viking Library Newsletter

Several sixth-grade English classes spent a day in the library with a spooky story and clues for a Halloween Breakout EDU lesson. Students had to find text evidence to prove their answers in groups to crack the codes.

Sixth-grade geography classes had a blast learning about North American regions while catching Pokémon characters throughout the lesson. Students worked very hard reading through the CultureGrams database to find answers to an online form before watching 360 videos about each region.

What's been going on? A lot!

Around the library lately

Have any new or lightly used children's books? Then bring them to the library from now until Dec. 14. All books will be donated to Shands Elementary School for their students. Let's help spread the love of literacy this holiday season!

Is your student looking for more reading material? Then have them look online or stop by the library for more than 60 new titles that just arrived. Have them get a new book in time for the winter break. Not sure they know what to pick? Have them stop by the library to discuss book options with me for suggestions for what they may enjoy. There's a good book out there for everyone!

New arrivals!

Read Squared

Is your student virtual but would like books from the Vanston Library? No problem! Have them access the catalog online, place a hold, and an email will be sent to them and their parent to pick up the book in the front office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Curbside pickup

Is your student tracking the pages they read in Read Squared? They should be! There are competitions to read the most pages in summer, fall, and spring. Have them track them every time they read.

Is your student into a good thriller? Have them join the Page Turners on Google Meet with code page every Wednesday from 7:55-8:15 as we read Time Bomb together and discuss.

Gale in Context Middle School

Did you know about this? Let's discuss!

Located in the Library: Find Information folder, this database highlights a handful of topics, but it has more than 500 topics, enough for every student to find something interesting to explore. Do they need help sorting through the information? Have them come by the library for one-on-one assistance.

Is your student wanting to read more about current events? Then have them use the Gale in Context Middle School database. Click on the icon in the student portal and then select from the list of topics.
