But there is hope! The world produces enough food so that the whole world could be fed twice! Developed countries should help those in need and stop wasting food!

The cause of hunger varies. It can be natural disasters, climate change, poverty, weak educational system, wars, inequality, bad government....

Hunger is the biggest problem in Africa and South Asia. The situation is alarming in Chad, East Timor and Madagascar. According to the Global Hunger Index Chad has on the scale from 0 to 100 an alarming score of 44,7. With that result is Chad the country that is mostly affected by hunger in the whole world.

Food waste and hunger in the world

Croats do not engage enough in physical activity. Overweight in schools is 12,85%. They rank at the 8th place in overweight in Europe. Because of it, there are a lot of cronical patients.

Excess weight, but also excess food!

Although Croats are plumpy and eat a lot, there is still surplus of food being thrown away. One part of the population are feeding animals with food leftovers while the second part throw them in garbage bins.

+info

Croats are not aware of how much food they throw away. They buy more food than they need.

How much food is thrown away in Croatia?

In Croatia, households throw more than 400 000 tons of food in a year. On average 75 kilos of food are thrown away per capita.

In Germany every year a total of 18 milion tonnes of food is loaded into garbage. But these are also peelings from fruit and vegetabls and bones. If you take this waste out of the total number of food waste, you get 10 milions tonnes of food waste. Most of the food waste is from hauseholds. An expiration date is not a date when food is not edible anymore, It only looks different. In stores fruits and vegetables must look perfect. If they do not look perfect, they are thrown it away. People need to plan shopping better. That means buying optically unattractive fruits and vegetables, and not buying too much. While we throw away food, people are starving. In Germany more than 100 000 people die every year from hunger.

“Even today I don’t have the words to describe the hunger,” Lee said. “My head was too big for my body because I was so malnourished and my neck couldn’t support the weight..."

Lee Oui-ryuk was on the verge of dying of starvation when he stole a block of tofu in a market in North Korea at the height of a nationwide famine. Too weak to run away after he swiped the food, Lee continued eating as the seller beat him with a metal stick, staining the white tofu red with his blood.

North Korea

North Korea has struggled to feed its people for more than two decades and went through a famine in the 1990s. Out of a total population of approximately 22 million, somewhere between 240,000 and 3,500,000 North Koreans died from starvation or hunger-related illnesses by 1997. While elites and top officials have access to imported foods like pizza and coffee, most people cannot afford staples such as rice, and they eat mostly corn instead.

Hunger from young age

Malnutrition is the cause or a contributing factor to 45% of deaths among children younger than 5 globally, according to the World Health Organization.

40% of children in sub-Saharan Africa grow up stunted.

Hunger causes more than two deaths each day for every 10,000 people.

During the rainy season, 60% of the country is inaccessible by roads, which limits transportation of food aid as well as goods sent to market.

237 million sub-Saharan Africans are chronically undernourished

Africa

As a collaboration between the MOA, WFP and other partners, the five-year plan, which runs from 2017 to 2021, aims to help achieve the goal of eradicating hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture, one of the 17 UN goals for its Sustainable Development Program until 2030, according to the launch event.

Unfortunately, there are still 150 million people in China who are considered malnourished. Most of those who suffer from hunger are women, children and the elderly from rural areas.Malnutrition in China has saddled children with a severe deficiency - slowed brain growth. The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and the UN World Food Program (WFP) on Tuesday jointly announced the launch of a strategic plan in an attempt to reduce hunger in China and other developing countries.

China

About 18 million tonnes of food are currently dumped in China each year.Households in Beijing generate 18,000 tonnes of waste per day, of which a huge part consists of food from supermarkets, bread, sandwiches, fast food, large pieces of fish and meat and even unopened bags of rice.

The Pontificial Academy of Sciences has invited experts from all around the world to consider a solution to food waste. National Food Waste Prevention Day (5th February) and the theme is "Stop wasting food! Feed the planet!"

In Italy, more than 2,200,000 tonnes of food are thrown away every year, or about 36.54 kg per person and worth nearly 12 billion €. In Italy 5.5 million people live in food poverty, and 14.5% of families find it difficult to have one protein meal every two days.

Italy

About 84,7% of the total food waste recorded was thrown in the bin, while the rest was either fed to the poor or some animals. About 189,2 million people in India don't have food.

Approximately 45% of India's land is degraded primarily due to deforestation, unsustainable agricultural practices and excessive groundwater extraction to meet food demand.

India

Indians waste as much food as the whole of the UK consumes. Up to 40% of the food produced in India is wasted. About 20 million tonnes of wheat are wasted in India. Weddings, restaurants and hotels are a huge source of food wastage. The number of hungry people in India has increased by 65 million more than the population in France.

Brazil has a population of over 190 million and is the largest country in South America in terms of both area and population. While Brazil’s gross domestic product is relatively high, extreme inequalities mean that more than 16 million people still live in extreme poverty – although the number of people in extreme poverty has more than halved in the past decade. Brazil is the world’s fourth-largest food exporter, and has sufficient productive capacity to meet its internal and external demand. Nevertheless, in 2009, 30% of Brazilian households – some 66 million people – faced some degree of daily food insecurity. Of these, more than 12 million people experience severe food insecurity, or hunger.

Access to food, not production, is the primary problem. Millions of people simply have too little income to buy adequate food. This is exacerbated by geographical variance in food production. Around 90 % of Brazil's total food production is concentrated in the south, south-east and the southern part of the central western region. However, 60 % of food-insecure people live in northern and north-eastern Brazil.
