US ELECTIONS

By Miss Plédran - Adapted from the work of Miss Hingamp - AC Rennes

Every 4 years there is an election for the President of the United States. It takes place at the beginning of November. This year the election is on November 3rd 2020.

U.S. Presidential Election

To become the president of the United States you must be a natural-born citizen of the United States. You must also be at least 35 years old and have been a United States resident for at least 14 years.

U.S. Presidential Election

On Election Day, the citizens of the United States vote for their choice. However, the people of the 50 states don't vote directly for their president. They vote for a group of people called the Electors.

U.S. Presidential Election

The number of Electors equals the number of districts in a State plus the number of Senators. There are two Senators per State. For instance, a State like Kansas has 6 Electors (4 districts + 2 Senators).

U.S. Presidential Election

The number of districts of each state is based on the number of people living in that state. This explains why Florida with 36 million inhabitants has 27 districts whereas Kansas, a State of 3 million people, has only 4 districts. Put simply, more population equals more districts which equals more influence in the election.

U.S. Presidential Election

There are 538 Electors in America in total, so the presidential candidate needs 270 Electors to win the election.

The winning candidate becomes President Elect until 20th January the following year when he formally becomes the President of the United States for the next 4 years. The President can be reelected to serve one more term only for a total of 8 years as President.
