ONE
On Friday, October 16th, 2020, the History & Geography teacher, Mr Samuel Paty, was killed in a terrorist attack as he left his middle school in the town of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. He was targeted because of a lesson on freedom of speech, during which he showed students caricatures from the newspaper Charlie Hebdo. France paid a national tribute to Mr Samuel Paty at the Sorbonne University in Paris on Wednesday, October 21st, 2020. His family chose this music to start the ceremony because it was one of his favourite songs. It is a song that talks about love and unity despite differences.

U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin. The group formed in 1976 and is one of the most successful rock bands of all time.
WHO ARE U2?
U2 wrote the song in Berlin, Germany in 1990. It appeared on their 7th album, Achtung Baby, and sold over 20 million copies. There are different interpretations of the lyrics. Some say it is a political song about the reunification of East and West Germany. Some say it is an AIDS sufferer addressing his father. Others say it is about a romantic break-up. The song is often played at funerals and evokes "universal love". Bono himself dedicated the song to Lady Diana at a concert in Paris in 1997 after her death.

In France, we are all free to like and believe different things. We are also free to disagree with and criticize opinions, ideas and beliefs. This is our freedom of speech, a right which also has limitations: you cannot defame, insult, incite hatred, violence or discrimination against others or glorify terrorism. To live in a peaceful democracy, it is important to accept and respect each other's opinions. As the European Union's motto says: we are "united in diversity".
