The Chanca tribe attacks the city of Cusco as it attempts an aggressive expansion to the south.

Pachacuti is the new Inca of Sapa. Then the Incas begin a period of rapid expansion. The Inca Empire, known as Tawantinsuyu, is born. It is possible that Machu Picchu was built at this time.

Pachacuti puts Topa Inca in charge of the Inca army. Topa Inca pushes the borders of the Inca Empire to the north, towards Ecuador.

PACHACUTI RETIRED IN 1471 AND DIED TWO YEARS LATER. BEFORE HE DIED, HE CHOSE TUPAC INCA AS HIS SUCCESSOR. TUPAC INCA PUSHES THE INCAS SOUTH TO CHILE, BOLIVIA AND NORTHERN ARGENTINA.

Tupac Inca dies. Huayna Capac, becomes Sapa Inca. Huayna Capac expands the Inca kingdom and the Inca domain in Ecuador.

Huayna Capac and many Incas die, maybe from smallpox. Huayna Cápac did not have an elected heir before she died, which caused a civil war between her two sons.

The second expedition of Francisco Pizarro arrives in Tumbes on the north coast of Peru.

1529 – 1530

The Spanish Crown gives Pizarro permission to conquer Peru. He begins his third expedition to Peru.

Atahualpa beat his brother in the battle of Quipaipan. The civil war ends, and another threat is presented.

Pizarro and his small force of conquerors capture Atahualpa in Cajamarca. He is held for ransom before being killed.

On July 26th, the Spaniards execute Atahualpa. They install Tupac Huallpa as the new Inca ruler, but he dies a few months later, probably from smallpox.

On November 15, the first Spaniards enter Cusco. In December, Pizarro turns Manco Inca Yupanqui into the new puppet ruler of the Inca Empire.

Pizarro founds the coastal settlement of Lima on January 18.

Manco Inca leads an uprising, besieging Cusco. Despite the victory, Manco Inca is forced to flee.

Manco Inca takes refuge in Vilcabamba. Vilcabamba becomes the new Inca capital, an isolated independent state and a refuge for the remains of the royal family.

A group of Spanish renegades assassinate Manco Inca. And with the disappearance of their leader, all significant resistance ends.

Francisco Toledo, Viceroy of Peru (Pizarro was killed), declares war on Vilcabamba. Vilcabamba is looted. Túpac Amaru is captured, and is decapitated in a public execution. The fall of the Inca Empire is complete.
