What's the difference between Sex and Gender?

Marina Shut Up is a female activist and a gender expert. She will tell us about the difference between these two terms.

...and thegenderbread person?

Do you know the gingerbread man?

Gender is one of those things everyone thinks they understand, but most people don't. Gender isn't binary. It's not either/or. In many cases it is both/and. A bit of this, a dash of that. This tasty little guide is meant to be an appetizer for gender understanding. It's ok if you're hungry for more. In fact, that's the idea.

Understanding the Genderbread Person

Identity, attraction, sex and expression are four different things that are related to each other. Let's have a look.

How many sexual orientations do you know? And types of families?

SOCIAL ROLES OF GENDERIf we conform to the cultural norms of male and female conducts then many people will feel left out because that classification is incomplete and excluding.

Queer

QUEERS: Umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities who are not heterosexual or are not cisgender. Queer people usually reject the classification of people by their sexual orientation or gender identity. They do not want to define themselves. They prefer to be gender fluid and to deconstruct the socially-imposed genders.

Read this glossary and explain 3 terms that were new for you.

Coming Out Stories

Here you can find help

Safety Around Coming OutUnfortunately, coming out doesn’t always go according to our hopes and plans. If people don’t react the way we wish, it does not reflect on the realness of our identities, and it is not our fault. You deserve to be accepted with open arms, care, and love. In situations where things are feeling unsafe or you expect that they might be, it could make sense to prepare a back-up plan for housing, food, school, and/or transportation, just in case.

Stereotypes

The conclusion is to not be judgemental. We have to look without judgment and prejudices. Keeping the binary scheme leads to verbal and physical abuse and bigotry against those who do not have a physical expression that fits the norm.
