Mr. Meant-to has a friend, his name is Didn't-Do. Have you met them? They live together in a house called Never-Win. And I am told that it is haunted by the Ghost of Might-have-Been

Marva Collins

If you can't make a mistake, you can't make anything

Why is it so important?

Mindset at work

Growth

  • Inspired by other person's success
  • Able to admit that you don't know something
  • Ready to learn

Fixed

  • Feedback is seeing as criticism
  • Other people's success is seen as a threat
  • Afraid to admit that you don't know something

Mindset in Relationships

Growth

  • "How can we work on this?"
  • "Let's talk about it"
  • "We are different, but we don't have to prove that one is better than the other"

Fixed

  • "We are a perfect match, so we don't have to work in our relation".
  • "People don't change, so there is no point in talking about a problem".
  • "Everything was so good and now it is so bad".
  • "One moment my partner was the light of my life, and next, my adversary".

How can we instill a growth mindset?

Steps we can take with our students

  • Make them reflect about their mindset
  • Make them take a test about it
  • Ask them about a situation when their mindset was changed
  • Promote the language of growth mindset
  • Encourage them to understand the power of "yet"
  • Make them reflect what they could have done better
  • Present skills as learnable
  • Ask them to share advices to help others
  • Share our own strength and weakness with your students
  • Make goal-setting assignments
  • Create assignments with different learning styles
  • Create projects, authentic assignments
  • Encourage group work
  • Gamify our course
  • Praise the effort
