The East German products guaranteed quality and efficiency to consumers, but did not compare to the advanced products that were in the West. East Germans watched the advertisements broadcast on Western television, but East Germany confiscated western products. Many products bore the caption - "Just like a Western product"

Although the East Germans did not suffer from extreme poverty, there were often shortages of certain products in stores - vegetables, fruits, meat and even products such as ketchup and envelopes. Some of the products made in East Germany did not even reach the shelves, but were sent directly for export. People did not buy according to need, but according to the supply that existed that day.

The East German government saw great importance in education, because it was an important way of assimilating communist principles and values from an early age. The education system was free, to allow mothers to go to work. Already in kindergarten the children were educated to consider the needs of the group and the general rather than their personal needs, and the kindergarten routine included a strict education for obedience, discipline and labour.

Apartment rental prices in East Germnay were very low, but there weren't many aprtaments. People had to wait in line for years to get an apartment. Many of the apartments did not have a shower or toilet. Only in the 1970s and 1980s, high-rise apartment towers began to be built housing options expanded.

In almost every living room in East Germany you could find this TV unit, which was considered the pinnacle of East German design. Like many other products created in East Germany, this unit was designed to provide both efficiency and practicality.

The East German Security Service, known as the Stasi, spied on civilians in order to expose subversion and disloyalty. The Stasi was an important tool in intimidating people from opposing the government. This is what a typical Stasi officer's office would look like, which of course included listening devices.
