These five areas in translation research and its subtopics were established by Andrew Chesterman y Jenny Williams in their book "The Map: A Beginner's Guide to Doing Research in Translation Studies" in 2002.

- Drama- Poetry- Prose fiction- Religious Texts- Children’s literature- Tourism Texts - Technical Texts - Legal Texts

- Source Text Analysis - Comparison of Translations and their source texts - Comparison of Translations and non-translated texts - Translation with commentary

Multimedia Translation

- Revoicing- Sur-/subtitling

There are a total of 12 areas in translation research and each one of them has at least three sub-areas/topics which are important in order to understand them and applied them successfully.
