TYPES OF MAPS

MAPS show the Earth as flat.

GLOBES show the Earth as a sphere. We can see that the Earth is tilted on its axis and it shows the land and the sea like it is.

They show the main NATURAL FEATURES of a landscape. (deserts, rivers, lakes, mountains).

They show MAN-MADE features. (cities, countries, roads, capital cities, and borders).

It is a map of a SMALLER AREA (town or city) and shows natural (river, forests) and man-made features (hospitals, parks). We use it to find directions to places where we want to go. They are usually divided into squares.

It tells us the place the map shows.

It shows the four cardinal points: North, South, East and West.

It shows the real distance between two places. If the area shown on paper is large we can see more details, but if it's small we can see less details.

They are small pictures that represent real things (mountains, rivers, roads, buildings).

It tells us what each symbol means.

LINES OF LATITUDE or PARALLELS, go horizontally and they are used to measure the distance from the Equator. The EQUATOR is the line in the centre of the Earth and divides the globe into Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. The countries near the Equator are very hot and the countries far from the Equator are cold.

LINES OF LONGITUDE or MERIDIANS go vertically from the North Pole to the South Pole. The line in the centre is called GREENWICH MERIDIAN (near London).

As we go to the left from the Greenwich Meridian we take away hours and as we go to the right we sum up.
