Vertebrates

They have a backbone and an internal skeleton.

Mammals

  • They are VIVIPAROUS (except monotremes that are oviparous mammals; i.e. echidnas).
  • Depending on the food they eat, they can be: CARNIVORES (they eat other animals), HERBIVORES (they eat plants) or OMNIVORES (they eat meat and plants).
  • They are BORN from their MOTHER'S WOMB.
  • They DRINK their MOTHER'S MILK.
  • They BREATHE with LUNGS.
  • Most mammals have FUR or HAIR that keep them warm.
  • Most mammals have 4 LEGS and live on LAND.
  • Some mammals live in the sea and use flippers to swim. (dolphin, seal…)
  • Bats are mammals that can fly and they are nocturnal.

Birds

  • They are OVIPAROUS. They incubate (sit on) their eggs to keep them warm.
  • They can be CARNIVORES, HERBIVORES or OMNIVORES.
  • Adult birds find food for their babies until they can find their own food.
  • They breathe with their LUNGS.
  • They have FEATHERS and WINGS and use their feathers for flying and keeping warm. Feathers are waterproof.
  • Birds have beaks and their shape depends on what they eat.The shape of the bird's beak depends on what it eats.
  • SEEDS EATING: Their beaks are short and thick. (for example: sparrows)
  • NECTAR EATING: Their beaks are long and thin.
  • CARNIVORES: Birds of prey have strong, sharp and hooked beaks for tearing meat.
  • FISH EATING: Their beaks are large long and sharp (for example: pelicans)

Reptiles

  • They spend most of their time on land, but some spend part of their time in water.
  • Most of them are oviparous. They lay their eggs on land.
  • Most of them are carnivores. Some are omnivores and eat plants, insects and small animals.
  • They breathe with their lungs.
  • Most have four limbs but some have no limbs.
  • They have scales that cover and protect their body.

Amphibians

  • They live part of their lives in WATER and part on LAND. Babies live and grow in the water.
  • They live near water or DAMP places.
  • They are OVIPAROUS. They LAY their EGGS in WATER.
  • Most amphibians are carnivores.
  • BABIES breathe with their GILLS and ADULTS with their LUNGS and through their SKIN.
  • Most of them have four limbs.
  • They have MOIST SKIN.
  • Baby amphibians change through METAMORPHOSIS and grow into adults.

Fish

  • They are the biggest group of vertebrates.
  • Most of them are OVIPAROUS but sharks are OVOVIVIPAROUS (babies grow in eggs and hatch in their mother's womb, giving birth to live babies).
  • They can be CARNIVORES, HERBIVORES or OMNIVORES.
  • They breathe with their GILLS.
  • They have FINS and a TAIL that helps them move.
They move in groups.
  • SHOALS: They are big groups of fish.
  • PACKS: Some fish (like sharks) move this way to hunt better.
  • SCHOOL: A big group of fish moving in the same direction.
