- Identify the key concepts in your topic or question
- You don't need to search for task words such as explain, discuss, compare
- Think about what other words (synonyms and alternative terms) might be used to describe the key concepts

Connecting keywords
- Now you have decided on your key concepts and come up with some keywords it is time to search
- Typing all your keywords and similar terms into the search box won't give you the best results
- You need to connect them by using AND and OR

Use AND to combine different concepts. This will search for results containing all of these words
Use OR to search for similar terms. This will search for results containing one or more of these words

Searching is not always straight forward. You will find yourself repeating steps as you do more searching. You might change your search terms as you find more information on your topic.
Use a truncation* to find the plural and other forms of a word e.g. Cognit* will find cognitive and cognition
