The projects presented here cover product or process innovations that are very likely to be early market movers, or developments that may soon take on the hurdles of commercialisation. The biotech innovations range from biorefining to bio-based health products and medical materials, and from plant and soil control or monitoring and bioinformatic platform products, to environmentally friendly surfactants and sustainable building and water technologies. The highly innovative projects convinced the evaluators of the uniqueness of their approaches as well their ability to meet strong end-user needs or respond to pressing environmental or health challenges.To be included as a ‘highly innovative project’, the initiatives had to score at least 9 out of 15.
