SILK TREE Class 2C – Marmara Primary School (Turkey) Once upon a time, a large plane tree and a silk tree were living in the same forest. The large plane tree was very arrogant, considered itself the largest tree in the forest, treating other trees with disrespect. He would not love anyone other than himself. He wasn’t paying any attention to his neighbor pink silk tree. He was always ignoring him. The pink silk tree was very upset with this attitude of the plane tree. One day, black clouds covered the sky. It was raining that day. The pink silk tree held out its leaves towards the rain. But unfortunately, the big plane tree prevented the leaves of the silk tree from getting wet. Whereas, my pink silk tree wanted to drink water. The large plane tree was so large that its roots had spread so deeply under the ground that it took all the water from the soil with its roots and left no water to my pink silk tree. Pink Silk tree: - My dear neighbor! Old and big tree! Please, give me a little water. I can't take it from the soil with my roots, you drink it all. The Plane tree heard Pink Silk tree. Plane tree: –This rain is my right. I am bigger than you. I need water the most. Hearing these words, Pink Silk Tree was upset. He needed water, too. Pink Silk tree: –Your leaves are so big that you prevent the rain from falling on me. You have such a big and strong trunk that you don't let the sun touch my leaves. Pink silk tree slowly bowed his head in front of him and continued: - If I can't get water from the soil, I can't feed. If I can't see the sun, I can't get stronger. Please, help me. Otherwise my leaves will fade away. Uncomfortable with these words, Big Plane tree responded mutteringly: –I am so big that I can't move. You go find another place. But Pink Silk tree couldn’t move. The Plane tree didn’t understand this. Pink Silk tree: -I can't hold on anymore. I need water. Help me Plane tree. The Plane tree did not even look at Pink Silk tree. The Silk tree lost its beauty day by day, the pink leaves, which everyone admired, faded. Those beautiful leaves had turned yellow. The whole forest was upset about it. Everyone was very angry with the behavior of the plane tree. The Plane tree understood his mistake. The poor Silk tree had faded now. The Plane tree was also very upset about this. He did not want it to be so. He did not anticipate that the leaves of the tree would be faded like that. He had regretted that he was badly treating my Silk tree. The Plane tree called the Pink Silk tree. I wish I wasn't so arrogant. I wish I hadn't mistreated you. I made a huge mistake. I am so sorry. The Plane tree understood his mistake. He promised the whole forest and the Pink Silk tree that he would not do it again. During the spring season, the leaves of the Pink Silk turned green. The Plane tree had shared the rain and sun with Pink Silk tree since then.

The Grandfather, the grandson and the donkey 5º-6º Grade San Isidro School – Guadiana (BA) (Spain) A grandfather and his grandson went on a trip with a donkey. The grandson had spent vacation with his grandfather and now he was going back to his parents' house to start the school again. Sometimes, the grandfather or grandson would get on the donkey and so, they were making the trip more comfortable. On the first day of the trip they arrived in a village. At that time, Grandpa was sitting on the donkey and the grandson was walking next to them. As they passed through the main street of the village some people got angry when they saw the old man on the donkey and the boy walking. They said: - It seems incredible! What a selfish old man! He's riding the donkey while the poor guy child is on foot. As they left the village, Grandpa got off the donkey. They arrived in another town and because they were both walking by the donkey, a group of boys laughed at them, saying: - What a pair of fools! They have a donkey and, instead of riding, they both go walking. They left the village; the grandfather put the child on the donkey and continued the journey. Arriving in another village, the people exclaimed in shock: - What a rude boy! What a lack of respect! He's riding the donkey and the poor old man walking next to them. On the outskirts of the village, the grandfather and grandson both rode on the donkey. They passed a group of peasants and they shouted at them: - Scoundrels! You are heartless! You're going to ride the poor animal into the ground! The old man and the boy carried the donkey on their shoulders. In this way they arrived in the next town. People came from all over and with loud laughter, the villagers mocked, saying: - What a pair of fools! We've never seen such dumb people. They have a donkey and, instead of riding, they carry it around. On leaving the village, Grandpa, after thinking for a while, told his grandson: “You see, you have to have your own opinion and not pay too much attention to what people say”.

THE WORD-SHUTTLE SPELL 5º-6º Grades San Isidro School – Guadiana (BA) (Spain) Oh! great wizard! A tragedy has happened! Little Manu has stolen the elixir with the Word-shuttle spell! Manu?? But if he is a rude boy who insults everybody! This is terrible… We have to stop him before he drinks it! But it was too late. Manu run the city insulting everybody just to see how the words took shape and the letters were launched against anyone as if his words were a ghost following them. So, following the path of silly, ugly, idiot, fat and old people, the wizards and his helpers found Manu. Stop doing that, Manu! You are annoying everyone. Please, drink this other elixir to undo the spell before it’s too late! I don’t want! This is very funny! And I am the only one who can do it! Ahaha! Fool! Silly! Bald! Old! He shouted like using a machine gun of spells. I have an idea great wizard- said a helper while avoiding Manu’s words- we could give the elixir to everybody. Are you crazy? That would be terrible! Manu was seven days insulting everybody and he became the lord of the city. People served him because they were afraid of him. But then, the wizard used his magical powers to give Manu a new potion while he was slept. Manu woke up ready to mock everybody. But when the servant entered into his bedroom a bunch of words such as “bully”, “capricious” or “rude” hit him very hard. Manu shouted crying and complaining because of the pain of the words. In only one day Manu hated that spell. It is the Wizard’s fault! Tomorrow I will visit him because I don’t want this spell anymore. But it was too late for the antidote, It didn’t work. You will have to live with these spells, the Word-shuttle and the Thoughts-receiver. Maybe you can learn to use them in a good way. Manu couldn’t walk in the street because everybody has very bad thoughts about him. Every people’s thought burnt Manu like fire. So, he started to be alone. One day, a little girl saw his sad appearance and she wanted to be his friend. So, when that thought touched Manu’s skin, it didn’t hurt him. That thought was very nice. So, Manu had an idea! I will use my Word-shuttle with good words! He used it with the little girl: You are very nice and very smart, little girl! Immediately his words produced nice thoughts! So, he started using his spell to help people and his neighborhoods started thinking good things about Manu, because he was very nice and kind with them. Time later, the spells lost their effect, but Manu continued using his kind words with people and he was happy forever.

THE CAKES AND THE TOOTH 5º-6º Grades San Isidro School – Guadiana (BA) (Spain) Once upon a time, a farmer wanted to see the king because he thought the king would be a very special man. So, he asked the boss for his salary and he said goodbye. During his long path to the court, he spent all his money and when he saw the king and he checked that he was a common man like him, he thought: I can’t believe I have walked this long path to see a simple common man. And unfortunately, I have spent all my money and I only have a half coin left. Because of the anger, a tooth started to hurt and because of the pain and hunger that he felt, he didn’t t know what to do, and he thought: If the dentist extracts my tooth and I pay with this half coin, I will die of hunger. But if I buy something to eat, I will die of pain. He was thinking what he was going to do when, without realizing it, he went to the shop window of a bakery where his eyes went behind the cakes. Two men that were walking by the shop, saw the farmer so fascinated that looking at the cakes to mock him, they asked the farmer: Sir, how many cakes would you eat at once? He responded: I’m so hungry that I would eat five hundred cakes. They said: Five hundred cakes? That’s impossible! He replicated: Do you think five hundred cakes are too many cakes? If you want, you can bet that I would eat a thousand cakes. They said: What will you bet? If I can’t eat a thousand cakes, you can extract me this first tooth he said pointing at the tooth that hurt him. They agreed, so the farmer started eating cakes until he couldn’t eat more cakes. Then, he stopped and said: I have lost, gentlemen. The two men, happy and joking called to the dentist who extracted the tooth. To mock him, they said: Ha ha ha ha! Have you seen this farmer? He said he could eat a thousand cakes and he bet his tooth!! He answered: You are sillier! You have fed me, and you have extracted me the tooth that was hurting me for free! After listening this, people started laughing. The two men, sad, payed the cakes and the tooth and left the town.

KELOGLAN (The Bald Boy) AND HIS FRIEND SQUIRREL Class D2 - Burhaniye Science and Art Center (Turkey) Once upon a time there was Keloglan. He lived in a beautiful village with her mother. They were very poor. When they didn’t have any food at home, Keloglan used to take a basket and go to the forest to pick mushrooms. So they could have some food to eat. It was foggy and rainy that day. Keloglan went to the forest again. He picked some mushrooms. He sat under a big tree to rest when he was tired. He heard a noise. He looked up and saw a squirrel. When the squirrel saw Keloglan, he suddenly came down from the branch and started to cry. He started telling Keloglan about his troubles. Keloğlan listened to the squirrel and tried to calm him down. Squirrel: “I am very happy to have a friend like you. It was nice talking to you.” Keloglan also told her about her mother. He explained that they were poor, they barely got along. The squirrel was upset about his friend's condition. Squirrel: “I want to do you a favor. Come with me.” They walked for hours. Finally, they came near the cliff. The squirrel said, "Go there, the partridges will meet you, they will ask you three questions. If you know it, you will see what you will gain." Indeed, Keloglan greeted the partridges. Queen partridge said, "We have three questions for you, if you know, you will get three boxes of gold." “Ask the questions, then “said Keloglan. The queen partridge showing a cherry tree asked, "How many cherries are there in that tree?" "That is an easy question, as much as the number of your gold feathers." Partridges asked “How do you know it?” Keloglan answered “If you don’t believe me, you can count them” They accepted his answer correctly. The queen partridge asked "Where is the middle of the world?" Keloğlan replied, "This is where you step on your feet." "If you don't believe it, measure it!" They accepted his answer correctly The queen partridge took two walnuts in her hands and asked the last question. "Let's know which nut is heavier". Keloglan replied, "The one that sinks in the water is heavier than the one that doesn’t sink” They accepted his answer correctly. They gave Keloglan three cubes of gold. Keloğlan turned back to his house. He gave the gold to his mother. Keloglan, "Dear mother, I will go and look for the squirrel." He found the squirrel. The squirrel was crying. The squirrel said, “I am actually the daughter of the sultan. But a wizard turned me into a squirrel.” Keloğlan said, “I will help you.” However, the squirrel said "It is very difficult", "You have to go to Mount Kaf and bring emerald water from the cave where there is a dragon." Keloğlan took a sharp sword and reached Mount Kaf. There were giant snakes guarding at the mouth of the cave. Keloglan scared them with his sword. Hearing the sound of the snakes, the dragon came out of the cave. He started to search around. Knowing this opportunity, Keloglan entered the cave and took some of the emerald water. Keloglan came back to Squirrel’s tree. "Here is the emerald water you want!" The squirrel said with joy, “I am very happy. You are very kind-hearted. ” As soon as the squirrel drank emerald water, it turned into a beautiful girl. Together they went to the sultan's palace. When the Sultan learned the situation, he said, “You made me very happy. I got my daughter. Say whatever you want from me. ” Keloğlan said, “Your health, sir. Your daughter actually helped me a lot. ” The sultan said, “I will give you 100 boxes of gold. You deserved it. ” Keloglan returned to his house. He lived a happy life with her mother ever after. And he always helped those who are in need.
