If + subj + Past simple + (...),

subj+ would + verb (infinitive) + (...)

Take a look at this condition:

¨If I lived in a big city...

I would go out every night.¨

Take a look at this result:

Take a look at this condition:

Do I live in a big city? No, I don’t. Right now I live in a small town. I want to imagine something different. I want to pretend that I live in a big city.

What would I do if I lived in a big city? How would my life be different?

In this sentence, the modal verb would means that you are imagining the result. This result hasn’t happened, and may or may not happen, but it’s possible.

Do I go out every night now? No, I don’t. There are more things to do in a big city.

Yes, use the simple past in this sentence even though you are talking about a present situation. That’s OK!

When do we use Second conditional?

We can use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true.

Maybe I'm imagining some dream for example.

  • If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.(I probably won't win the lottery)
  • If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello.
  • She would travel all over the world if she were rich.
  • She would pass the exam if she ever studied.(She never studies, so this won't happen)

Asking Hypothetical Questions

Hypothetical means imaginary or not real. When you ask a hypothetical questions, you ask someone to imagine what she or he would do in certain situations. These situations are not real and there may be no possibility that these situations will happen in the future, but it is fun to imagine something different.

What would you do if … ?

What would you do if you didn’t have to work?

What would you do if you were fluent in English?

What would you do if you won the lottery?

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

If you had only one day to live, what would you do?

We can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because it's not true.

  • If I had his number, I would call him. (I don't have his number now, so it's impossible for me to call him).
  • If I were you, I wouldn't go out with that man.

Giving Advice: “If I were you, I would …

The most common use of the second conditional is giving advice to people.

You imagine what you would do if you faced the same decision or situation as someone else.

If I were you, I wouldn’t tell anyone about this.

If I were her, I’d apologize for being late.

If I were you, I would dump him and find a new boyfriend!

IMPORTANT!!!

  • We never use ¨TO¨ between ¨WOULD and the VERB¨
  • Ex: NOT CORRECT: I would to play.

  • We use ¨WERE¨ instead of 'was' with I and 'he/she/it'. This is mostly done in formal writing).
