Diego Velázquez (6 June 1599 in Sevilla – August 1660 in Madrid) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. Diego Velázquez had a hard life. He got married when he was eighteen. With his wife, he had two daughters. In 1622, Velázquez moved to Madrid and thanks to his father-in-law's connections, he started to paint for the Spanish Royalty. In 1656, he produced perhaps his most acclaimed and famous work, "Las Meninas." Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali considered him a strong influence. Click here for a dictionary.
