Its creators
The idea was of Sergio Pugliese, of the Italian television RAI and then approved by Marcel Bezençon of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
The first Eurovision Song Contest took place in 1956 in Switzerland. The Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg, and Italy took part. Switzerland won.
The first edition
It is the most followed non sporting event in Spain. In 2018, more than 8 million people were watching the final, around a 51.2% of share.
Nowadays
With the end of the Cold War, the contest increased their participants countries.
EUROvision?
For example, Israel and Australia are not from the European Union but they belong to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), so they can participate.
Our first time was on 1961. We reached the 9th position out of 16 countries.
Spain
We are the only country to win the contest twice in a row, in 1968 and 1969.
8 years later...
Masiel - La la la (1968)
Did you know that...Joan Manuel Serrat were going to sing instead of Masiel, but he wanted to sing in Catalan, so he couldn't do it because of the Franco's dictatorship.
Salomé - Vivo cantando (1969)
Our neighbours had to wait 53 years to win an edition of the contest, with the song "Amar pelos dois" de Salvador Sobral.
Portugal
Salvador Sobral - Amar pelos dois (2017)
