In the Fortress
You're on Tower Green. A guard is offering his help. Find out about this place in order to be able to solve his riddle and give him the password. If you do it, he will lead you to the next stage.
Welcome to the Tower of London For more than nine hundred years the Tower of London has stood beside the River Thames. Over the centuries this massive, medieval fortress housed the Crown jewels, the armoury, the mint (coin factory), and the zoo. But this ancient castle, with its many turrets (tourelle) , towers, battlements and a moat (douves, fossé), also held one of England's most notorious prisons. In times past, the very mention of its name filled people with dread. The guards at the Tower were called Yeoman Warders, and they and their families were required to live within the fortress's high stone walls. In 1661, the royal astronomer King Charles II complained that the wild ravens at the Tower were making too much racket and causing a nuisance. King Charles was about to have his archers destroy the birds, when he was reminded of the ancient legend that said if the ravens were ever to leave the Tower, it would fall to its enemies. The King then decreed that his archers should shoot all the birds, save nine. These remaining nine were to have their wings clipped so they could not fly away. They were to be provided with food and shelter within the Tower walls.
The Royal Mint produces coins for the United Kingdom. Edward I installed the Mint within the safety of the Tower's walls in 1279 and until 1810, most of the coins were made there, in a dedicated area known as Mint Street.
The oldest part of the Tower of London is the White Tower. William of Normandy (also known as William the Conqueror) built it soon after he conquered England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
In the 1230s, Henry III ordered MASSIVE new stone walls and eight giant towers. The towers opened on to walkways so that archers could keep out for attackers. Around the tower, Henry dug a new, wide moat to keep water in a low tide.

MONARCHY IN DANGER? Another raven escapes. RM says: "The bird I least expected to leave..."
THE GREAT ESCAPE Two years ago, just before it was time to trim her feathers, Munin made a break for it (escaped). "She ended up sitting on a Crown on top of the White Tower." Chris recalls. "There was some scaffolding (échafaudage) , so I went up to try to get her back and she flew off." "Two days later, a man in Greenwich called to say he had a raven in his garden. I said to him:' Have you got a chicken wing, a blanket and a pair of gloves?' He said 'yes'. So I explained he had the destiny of the tower and the Monarchy in his hands. We turned up later and there was Munin safe and sound."

You're now in the Bloody Tower. Bribe the guard to escape as quickly as you can !
The Tower of London has held some of Great Britain's most famous prisoners. Read and Listen to their gruesome stories...
currently being restored. Sorry for the inconvenience
Anne Boleyn (1507-36) She was the second wife of King Henry VIII. In order to marry her, Henry had to divorce Catherine of Aragon. The divorce went against the Roman Catholic belief system, so Henry created his own church of England. This was the beginning of Protestantism in England, with the King as the head of Church instead of the Pope. In 1533 Anne gave birth to a daughter, the future Elizabeth I of England. But when she failed to produce a son, Henry looked for a way to get rid of her, so that he could marry again. Anne was put on trial and found guilty of treason, although she was probably innocent. She was executed in the Tower of London in 1536.
Guy Fawkes (1570-1606) He was imprisoned in the Tower of London for his role in the notorious Gunpowder Plot. A militant Catholic, he planned to assassinate the Protestant King James I and the other members of the British government by blowing up the House of Lords. He and his accomplices packed a cellar with gunpowder, which they planned to detonate on November 5th, 1605, during the opening of Parliament. But the plan was discovered before the gunpowder could be detonated. Guy Fawkes was then arrested and executed.
Lady Jane Grey (1537-54) Known as The Nine Days Queen, she was a great grand-daughter of Henry VII and a Protestant. She was 15 years old when the Duke of Northumberland persuaded her to marry his son and persuaded the King, Edward VI, to name her as the next queen instead of the King's roman Catholic sister, Mary I. Jane became queen in 1553 when King Edward died, but soon put in prison by supporters of Mary I, and was later executed in the Tower of London.
