The English language is one of the two official languages of the UN (the other one is French).It is considered to be the LINGUA FRANCA of the world (a language used by most people).English Language Day at the UN is celebrated on April 23, the date of William Shakespeare's birth and death.

- Modern English... is it more Germanic or French? What do you think?
- English is a Germanic language (just like German, Swedish, Norwegian...)
- It has elements of different languages: Anglo-Saxon, Latin, French, Greek...
WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT ITS ORIGIN?
... and English is in third!
But, the language with the highest number of NATIVE speakers is Mandarin Chinese.
Spanish is in second place...

A LOT! There are about 4000 new words each year that become a part of the English language. Some of them are very modern! Do you know how to say OMG, LOL , IMO , BRB, ROFL in your native language?
