UNIT 3: THE HUMAN BODY

BODY SYSTEMS

Our circulatory system is like a transport system. It carries nutrients around the body. It’s made up of the heart, the blood and the blood vessels. The heart is a muscle. It works day and night to pump blood to every part of the body. The blood is a red liquid that goes around the body. It travels in thin tubes called blood vessels (arteries and veins) .

Our digestive system helps us to get the nutrients we need from food. The mouth has teeth that break the food and a tongue that mixes the food with saliva. The oesophagus is a long tube. Food goes down here to the stomach. The stomach is like a bag. Food mixes with gastric juices. The small intestine is a very long thin tube. The thick liquid from the stomach goes through here and the nutrients pass into the blood. The large intestine is a wide tube. It connects to the anus. What our body doesn’t need goes along here

Our excretory system helps our bodies to get rid of excess water and waste products. The blood goes through the kidneys. The kidneys remove excess water and waste products from the blood and turn them into urine. The ureters are long tubes where the urine goes down to the bladder. The bladder is like a bag. It collects the urine. The urethra is a short tube. Urine goes down here and leaves our body.
