Easter is a religious celebration, more specifically of the Christian. In it we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus after being crucified. Easter marks the end of the holy week, too.Normally, in Easter we do processions like representing how jesus went with the cross, and then, how Jesus resurrected; and we went to the church to celebrate Easter.
When and why we celebrate easter and what do we do in it?
Bizkaia: In Bizkaia there are two main places where there are big celebrations: Balmaseda and Bilbao
- In Balmaseda there are usually processes and more than 500 people take part in them.
- In Bilbao there are more than 3000 people participating in each process.
How we celebrate easter in the basque country:
In the Basque country, the Jewish people celebrate easter doing parades with statues in which they symbolize Abraham; he is like Jesus in our culture, but as Jewish don’t believe in him, they worship Abraham. In each town, people that live in there go out and take part in the parades. When the parade finishes, they have dinner together.
Jewish easter:
The processes usually go through and along the streets. The bigger ones are done in Bilbao and Balmaseda. In the processes, they take out some figures from several churches, and they carry them through the town. Only members of the church’s administration can carry the figures. In Balmaseda, the “Via Crucis” is one of the most important things they do on Easter. Actors and actresses represent the last days of Jesus’ life. In Bilbao, there are twelve processes in nine days. More than three thousand believers take part in these processes.
Processes:
In christianity it is the week before Easter, but sometimes Easter and the Holy week are celebrated at the same time. Many Christian cultures have different traditions like church attendance, floats, sculptures of Christ's life, arrest and burial and contributing to the Great Feasts, to echo the theme of resurrection
Holy week
Our Homeland Day is the proclamation of our land, the Basque land. It is celebrated on the resurrection Sunday as it is the resurrection of our “God and ancient law” (Jaingoikoa eta lege zaharra). In the dictatorship days , this day was completely banned and was therefore used for national proclamation. Since the beginning of democracy, 1978, the Basque Autonomous Community added to the Aberri Eguna a greater institutional value. This day is also celebrated in Navarre and the north provinces of the Basque Country which belong to France. It is celebrated in Pamplona as the usual way to proclaim the institutionalization of Navarre as capital of the Basque Country..
