This period began when the first humans appeared.
During this period people discovered how to make fire and how to cultivate plants from seeds.
Both agriculture and trade began in this period.
Prehistory ended when writing was invented, about 5000 years ago.
Many important civilisations developed during Ancient History, including the Ancient Greeks and the Romans.
They built cities and introduced the use of coins.
The Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula. It was part of the Roman Empire for almost 500 years.
Ancient History ended when the Roman Empire fell in 476 A.D.
In 711 A.D. Muslims from North Africa invaded the Iberian Peninsula.
The peninsula was divided between the Christian kingdoms and the Muslim territory of al-Andalus. The Christian kingdoms slowly conquered lands from al-Andalus. This process is called the Reconquista.
The Middle Ages ended in 1492, when Columbus discovered America.
During this period Spain became one kingdom. It was very powerful in Europe.
Spain also established an international empire.
Many important paintings and works of literature were produced in the 16th and 17th century Golden Age.
The Early Modern Age ended in 1789, when the French Revolution happened.
In the 19th century the Industrial Revolution happened. Factories used machines to make products, and trains were invented.
In the 20th century people's lives improved because of inventions such as cars, planes and computers.
There were also two world wars in which millions of people died.
The Modern Age hasn't ended yet.
