Developing 21st Century Skills Through Theme-Based Instruction and by Applying Multiple Intelligence Theory: Teacher Competencies

The paper was presented at Professional Competences for Teaching in the 21st Century conference at the Faculty of Education in Jagodina, University of Kragujevac


Abstract:

The paper provides a methodological overview of the framework, which aims to establish the language of instruction from first to fourth grade, as well as to improve the current pedagogical practice in teaching foreign languages in general. During the planning of theme-based teaching units, in correlation with the content of other subjects, an innovative English teacher should aim to develop the 21st-century skills and try to select the resources for the class by applying Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. Besides the proposal of the framework with concrete aims and principles, interactive methods for teaching, such as the use of digital technologies and project work, are presented in the paper as well.

Organizing an English summer camp for the 3rd and 4th graders. Developing
thematic lesson plans, along with creating promotional videos. The topic was ''World
Travel'' and we spent one week in every country - Egypt, Sweden, Japan, and Mexico.

Developing and teaching a storytelling-based curriculum with a collection of more than 35 books for primary school students in English. Focusing storytelling and crafting as the main tools for language acquisition. This curriculum is created for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, and it is organized in a local cultural center which aims to provide many educational activities. It is located in the suburbs and another aim is to include children from socially deprived environments by providing free education.

I started as a volunteer and ended up being paid, and becoming an official consultant and one of important members of the culture center in a short time.

Organization of children’s birthday celebrations, performances, and plays. Organizing
competitions, games, and activities.
Organizing creative workshops for children.

Became a head animator, in charge of leading all birthday parties and activities.
Wrote a script for a play for children, designed and made costumes.
