9.000 b.c

The Neolithic revolution was a crucial change in the ways of life of humanity, in which they went from a nomadic lifestyle to a sedentary one, which also brought about an economic transformation, from a gathering economy to a producer. It stretches from the Paleolithic period, when stones were still being carved, to the Neolithic, when stones were polished, all for the purpose of making tools and weapons. It is part of the "Stone Age".

Pottery remains

"Who are the Iberians? Indigenous tribes of the Iberian Peninsula, extended along the Mediterranean coast, from the Pyrenees."

From the Ancient Age we find multiple vestiges throughout the term of Alcalà. In the first place, the presence of foreign materials brought by the trading peoples of the eastern Mediterranean stands out,

Eight centuries of muslim domination

Taking advantage of the internal crisis of the Visigothic kingdom, in constant internal struggles for monarchical power, Muslim troops, made up of Arabs and Berbers, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in the year 711, beginning the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. In just three years, the Muslims managed to conquer most of the Hispanic lands. the Iberian peninsula became a new province of the Islamic caliphate (Muslim empire), Al-Andalus.

MIDDLE AGE

The caliphate provided the region with irrigation systems and crafts and trade developed. The Muslims introduced chess from India to Spain, new crops such as rice, artichokes, oranges, aubergines...

" The contributions of the Arabs were numerous in all fields of knowledge."

The Taifa kingdoms gradually disappeared in the face of Christian expansion. In the second half of the 13th century, only the Nasrid kingdom of Granada remained, which lasted for two hundred and fifty years, until its final conquest by the Catholic Monarchs (1492).

The Templars

In 1234 the castle passed into the hands of the Order of the Temple, who administered it on behalf of the Crown of Aragon after the peaceful surrender of the Islamic population of Xivert. Thus, the Templars proceed to remodel and expand the fortress, occupying it while the Islamic civilian population occupies the town at the foot of the fortress.

The Templars, who had owned the castle of Xivert since the Christian conquest (1233), granted a settlement charter (CARTA DE POBLACIÓ) in 1251 in favor of several Christians to settle in the place of Alcalá, while the place of Xivert remained a Muslim population. The first church was established in the place where we find now the current temple. In the 16th century the original church was enlarged due to the increase of population. Finally, in the 18th century, the church was demolished in order to build a larger church . The present church was built from 1736 to 1766.

Towns shaped by the attack of pirates

In 1547 an attack by Barbary pirates instigated by the Ottoman Empire was repulsed by the population of Alcalà in the very streets of the town after the pirates tried to loot the town (an episode that is still remembered in the town with a stone inscription in the place of the facts) as well as another of these pirate attacks would still occur in the watchtower of Capicorb in 1586

At the end of the 16th century, the Moorish population of Xivert had several hundred settlers, who had rebuilt and repopulated the town after looting in previous decades. This population, however, had to go into exile along with the rest of the Moors in Spain after the signing of the expulsion decree by Felipe III in 1609.

It was designed and commissioned by Baron de Alcahalí and inaugurated in 1921. It is a sample of rational architecture, it consists of two rows of metal columns that support as many metal arches. In 1998, and due to the deterioration of the roof, it was decided to remodel it, repairing the beams and replacing the original roof with a glass one, as we can find it today. It currently hosts the Friday market. There are some modernist buildings in this square.

In this square was located the Franciscan convent. The monks were in charge of education, so the schools in the 19th century were located in the monastery. This building was demolished in the 1970s. Now we can find the health center and also our center. The high school is placed in the garden were monks cultivated their vegetables
