UNIT 1

textile art

Textile is one of the most important sectors of Sardinian artistic crafts

The best known and appreciated products of this art are those of the popular typical traditions: rugs, covers, tapestries, cushions, shawls, curtains made of wool, cotton, fine linen that are still made by hand using ancient looms.

textile crafts from aggius

Today only 6 weavers work in the textile lab, but other women do it at home

The textile lab called I.S.O.L.A. was founded in our village by 10 women in 1997 and it still preserves the weaving traditions from Aggius

the wedding ring from aggius

tHE "AUZA" OR BROOCHES

In the engagement ring, or Militaria, there are two hearts on the sides. The initials of the bride and groom were engraved in the heart.

The wedding ring from Aggius has a main flower with six petals which symbolize fertility. The four-leaf clovers on the ring were meant to bring good luck to the bride and groom.

Brooches are present in almost all the traditional female costumes on the island. Basically, there are two types: one is applied to the cap or to the shawl or veil; the second ensures that the blouse remains perfectly buttoned down the front.

Buttons or small bells are usually worn in many costumes throughout the island. They adorn the blouses and waistcoats worn by both males and females.
