WHY DO WE CELEBRATE Halloween?
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ABOUT CELTS?
Celts celebrated the end of summer and the harvest every October 31st.
That special party was called...
SAMHEIN
This was long, long back... even before Jesus Christ!
Celts dressed up and used masks to scare away the evil spirits.
Catholics changed their festival in honour of all the saints in heaven to November 1st.
Some countries forgot the old tradition, but Samhein was celebrated in countries such as Scotland, Wales, England and, specially, Ireland.
Around 1800. Lots of Irish people went to North America.
Samhein festival arrived to Canada and USA
but, why "Halloween"?
In the beginnig of past Century (XX) the term "All Hallow Even" became...
...HALLOWEEN
Since November, 1st was the day of celebrating de Holy Spirits, the evening before that (October, 31st), became the Holy Evening, or as they said: "The festival of All Hallow Even"
Nowadays, we also dress up and use masks when celebrating Halloween as Celts did 3.000 years before us.
We also carve the pumpkin and keep it outside our homes to ward off the evil spirits.
But what we like most about Halloween is that we can go out with friends asking for sweets and candies!!
Trick or treat!!!
¡¡gracias!!
thanks!!
