The Central Mountain Chain. These mountains are about 2,000 metres high. They are grouped in mountain ranges, for example the Gata, the Gredos and the Guadarrama ranges. They divide the Inner Plateau in two: the Northern Sub-plateau and the Southern Sub-plateau.

The Mountains of Toledo Are in the Southern Sub-plateau. They are low mountains that separate the Tajo and Guadiana river valleys.

The Cantabrian Range Is in the north. It includes the high peaks of the Picos de Europa which are up to 2,500 metres high. They separate Castile and León from Asturias and Cantabria.

The Iberian Mountain Chain Is in the east. The average height of these mountains is 2,000 metres. It extends across the autonomous communities of Castile and León, Rioja, Aragón, Castile-La Mancha and the Community of Valencia.

The Sierra Morena Is in the south. These mountains are less than 1,300 metres high. They separate the Inner Plateau from Andalusia.

The Basque Mountains Lie to the north, between the Basque Country and Navarre. They are not very high, with pointed peaks.

The Pyrenees Lie to the north, in Navarre, Aragón and Catalonia. They form the border between Spain and France. They are very high.

The Catalan Coastal Chain Lies to the northeast. This is formed by two mountain chains which are parallel to the Mediterranean coast.

The Betic Mountain Chain Lies to the southeast. It runs through Andalusia, Castile-La Mancha, the Region of Murcia and the Community of Valencia. There are two ranges. The Penibetic Range is parallel to the Andalusian coast. The Subbetic Range lies inland.
