The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the yearly conference of the United Nations where governments, UN Agencies and civil society come together to discuss the achievements that have been made towards Agenda 2030. This year, the HLPF 2019 was dedicated to:

“ Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality ”

As the most global university association contributing to Sustainable Development and having the Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council, IAU took an active part in the debates and organized a series of events, together with a delegation of IAU Member Universities.

The event explored how the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is changing the way universities are working and how they engage critically with the SDGs, with a specific focus on SDG 4 (Quality Education), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

IAU advised on the programme and nominated Prof. Dr. Henning Jensen to speak on behalf of the University of Costa Rica, UDUAL and CONARE. IAU Secretary General Dr. Hilligje van’t Land, ACU Secretary General Dr. Joanna Newman and AUF Advisor to the Rector Georges Marmaloud delivered a statement on the need for Higher education in Agenda 2030.

Education is the driver for development and for changing behavior and mindsets. SDGs are a roadmap to guide research and teaching - requiring a transdisciplinary approach.

International Green Gown Awards Ceremony

Recognising exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by the world's universities and colleges, the International Green Gown Awards set the bar and put every learning institution at the heart of delivering the UN Global Goals.

IAU first Vice-President and President of Siam University, Prof. Pornchai Mongkhonvanit, acted as one of the official ceremony hosts and awarded the “Sustainability Institution of the Year” awards.
