Galileo's

Galileo was born on 15th February in 1564, in Pisa (Italy)

When he was ten years old, his family moved to the city of Florence, where he began his education

He went to the University of Pisa to study medicine in 1581

In 1592, Galileo moved from Pisa to the University of Padua where he was permitted to experiment and discuss new ideas

In 1609, Galileo made great improvements to the telescope

And he made many discoveries with it: the four lange moons around Jupiter, the phases of Venus and the sunspots of the Moon.

He discovered that objects free fall with the same acceleration regardless of the mass

DISCOVERIES

Years later this experiment was made .It proved Galileo's theory

Galileo and delle Collombe had a kind of public, scientific duel on the following question: why does ice float on water? Delle Collombe argued that buoyancy depended on the shape of the different substances. As ice was the solid form of water, it had a different shape and consequently, it floated. On the other hand, Galileo thought that the fact that an object was able to float in a liquid depended exclusively on the densities of both the liquid and the solid.

To prove he was right, delle Collombe carried out the following experiment: he took a sphere and a warefare of the same material, ebony. He put them both on the water surface, the warefare floated and the sphere sank. He seemed to be right, and Galileo was unable to prove that his hypothesis was correct.

NOWADAYS WE KNOW THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE SURFACE TENSION, THAT PREVENTED THE WAREFARE, WITH A SMALL WEIGHT AND A LARGE SURFACE, FROM SINKING. IF GALILEO HAD SUBMERGED BOTH OBJECTS INTO WATER, HE WOULD HAVED ESCAPED FROM THE SURFACE TENSION EFFECT, AND BOTH OBJECTS WOULD HAVE SANK.

In 1632, Galileo wrote a book called "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems"

Galileo died on 8th January 1642, in Tuscany (Italy).
