will have the opportunity to participate in the maneuvering of the ship, the whaling (which at that time was still "old-fashioned" with rowing boats), to make scientific observations on the Arctic marine fauna and to maintain the morale of the crew by organizing boxing tournaments, which he practiced as an informed amateur7.

In 1890, Conan Doyle studied ophthalmology in Vienna and moved to London in 1891 to establish himself as an ophthalmologist. He writes in his autobiography that no patient crosses the threshold of his door. This gives him more time for writing. Conan Doyle decides in the spring of 1891 to publish the Sherlock Holmes surveys in soap operas in The Strand Magazine

Conan Doyle personally investigated two cases tried, contributing in both cases to the release of the convicts22. The first case, in 1906, involved a paralytic man, George Eladji, charged in December 1906 with blackmail and cattle slaughter at Great Wyrley (Staffordshire). Conan Doyle led an energetic press campaign highlighting the many shadow points of the affair and Eladji was expanded at discretion22 in 1907.

The second case is that of Oscar Slater (1872-1948), a German Jew arrested in New York and found guilty of hitting on an 82-year-old Miss Marion Gilchrist in Glasgow on December 21, 1908

In May of 1891, while writing some of the early Sherlock Holmes short stories, Conan Doyle was struck by a virulent attack of influenza which left him between life and death for several days. When his health improved, he came to realize how foolish he had been trying to combine a medical career with a literary one.

he came from a rich family.
