What is language mediation?

It can be categorised as cross-language or interlinguistic mediation, which involves an exchange of information between two languages, or intralinguistic mediation, which involves transferring information within the same language.

Language mediation is the fifth competence defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Tasks for C1 students

They will be provided with a text of up to 300 words, a graph chart, infographics…. In 10-15 minutes they will have to do two tasks: 1. In 5 minutes they will have to select the information relevant to the task, structure and adapt it to give it to the receiver in up to 3 minutes.

In the certificate exam students are required to do two cross-language spoken mediation tasks.

WRITTEN MEDIATION. They will be provided with a text of up to 300 words, a graph chart, infographics.. In 40 minutes they will have to select, structure and adapt the information relevant to the task and write it down in between 90 and 110 words.

Tasks for C1 students

SPOKEN MEDIATION. They will be provided with a text of up to 300 words, a graph chart, infographics…. In 5 minutes they will have to select the information relevant to the task, structure and adapt it to give it to the receiver in up to 3 minutes.

Students that follow the continuous assessment process are required to do one cross-language spoken mediation task and one written mediation task.

• use a level of language in accordance with the C1, but remember it IS NOT a requirement to provide an exact translation of a text.

• decide whether there is some cultural information, not explicit in the text, that should be given.

• structure the information in bullet points and do not delay using English, DO it as soon as you start taking notes.

• select the information, ONLY the one that is necessary for the task, discard any irrelevant information.
