New York City is composed of 5 boroughs.From North to South : the Bronx in the North ,Brooklyn in the South , Queens in the East , Staten Island in the South-West and Manhattan in the North-West

MANHATTAN is the oldest and the smallest borough of New York City . It has the tallest buildings and skyscrapers

THE BRONX is the most northern borough of New York City. It is full of beautiful parks and it is home of the famous Yankee Stadium where the New York Yankee's baseball team plays.

QUEENS is the most eastern borough of New York City . It is considered the most diverse place in the world , because approximately 138 languages are spoken there.Queens is home to 2 airports : John F.Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.

BROOKLYN has the reputation of being the coolest borough of New York City and is home to the most diverse restaurants.

STATEN ISLAND is the most southwestern borough of New York City . It is the least populated borough. From the Staten Island Ferry you can see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

New York has got many nicknames.It is called "The Big Apple" or "The City that never sleeps" because there is always something to do and somewhere to go in New York City.It's a city that is open 24 hours a day !

The first Europeans to colonize the island were the Dutch . They settled in Manhattan in 1624and started trading fur.In 1626 they bought Manhattanfrom the Indians for 60 guilders ,that is $24 and named it New Amsterdam.

MANHATTAN = an Indian name "MANAHTIN" meaning " island of the hills"

In 1664 , the British captured New Amsterdam from the Dutch and changed its name to New York , in honour of the Duke of York , the English King's brother.

New York remained English until 1783 when the Americans won the Revolutionary war against England. That year they made New York the first capital city of the USA.

The American Revolutionary War 1775-1783 also known as the American War of Independence, was a war between Great Britain and its Thirteen Colonies (allied with France) which declared independence as the United States of America.

For many years , millions of immigrants came from Europe and Asia to settle in New York . They were looking for religious or political freedom and a better life. They wanted to live "The American Dream"

Nowadays , New York is an important cultural , economic and financial center. New York is an exciting city because it has a multicultural population with many different traditions , cultures and lifestyles.

Manhattan is not very big but it's very famous .Many TV series and films are shot in Manhattan , so the skyline is a familiar sight to people all over the world .

In Manhattan most of the streets and the avenues are straight except one very famous which goes from the North to the South. It is the longest one in Manhattan .It's called Broadway . Broadway was originally an Indian trailIt's a place of entertainement where you can find lots of theaters , cinemas, musicals.The avenues go North-South and the streets go West-East

There are so many skyscrapers in New York ! During the first half of the 20th century , many architects competed to build the best and tallest buildings ever the "Skyscraper Race" started .

As the population of New York City increased in the 20th century , tall buildings and then skyscrapers staeted to dominate the skyline . In turn , the Empire State Building , The Chrysler Building and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were listed as the tallest buildings in the world. Today , the "Freedom Tower" is the tallest tower on the New York skyline at 541m.

The Empire State Building is a 102 storey skyscraper located on Fifth Avenue .It measures 381m ( 443 with its antenna spine )It was inaugurated in 1931.It was designed in an Art Deco styleIt has long been the tallest skyscraper in the world

Central Park is a huge park located in the middle of Manhattan skyscrapers . It was created in 1873.It is the largest park in New York City and it's known as "The Lungs of the City"

In Central Park , there are some artificial lakes and a golf ground . Newyorkers can ice-skate , experience pedicab tours or horse-drawn rides , roller-skate , cycle , bird-watch . They can also attend concerts , play sports or just go for a walk.It's the perfect place for Newyorkers to relax.

The main attraction in Central Park is the zoo.You can see parrots , polar bears , pinguins , snow leopards or tortoises.

Liberty Island is a small inhabited island near Manhattan.On the island there is one of the most important American monumant : The Statue of Liberty.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France .It was offered to the USA in 1886 as a sign of friendship between the two countries.The Statue of Liberty is also known as "Lady Liberty" but its full name is "The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World"

"Lady Liberty" is holding a torch in its right hand and a tablet in its left hand reading the date July 4th 1776 which is the date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The MET ( Metropolitan Museum of Art ) is in Central Park . It's a famous museum which was inaugurated in 1870

This is the MoMA ( Museum of Modern Art ) It is one of largest museums of modern art in the world. It is located in ManhattanIt dates from 1929

Brooklyn Bridge was built over the East River and it connects Brooklyn and Manhattan . The view of Manhattan from the bridge is so spectacular ! When it was opened in 1883 , it was the world's biggest suspension bridge.

Macy's is the largest store in the world . You can buy almost everything you want there . Each year , Macy's organizes a big parade to celebrate Thanksgiving .

FACT 19

FIFTH AVENUE is the place where you can go shopping . There are lots of luxury shops.

HARLEM is the center of Black American culture with famous jazz clubs and gospels choirs as well as Hispanic communities . By the 70's it was a very poor and dangerous neighborhood but after years of renovation it has become a nice place to live in.

Ground 0 is the area where The Twin Towers used to stand before the terrorist attack of September 11th,2001.It's a memorial honoring the victims
