WHAT IS IT? Scotland is one of the four countries of the United Kingdom and it is famous for its amazing scenery, culture and history. The major attraction of Scotland is its beautiful nature. Its lochs (lakes), hills and valleys are famous all over the world. In Scotland there are more than 700 islands.

ISLANDS AND SEAS OF SCOTLAND Among the most famous ones, there are the Shetlands to the north-east and the Hebrides to the west. The seas of Scotland are different, including: North Atlantic Ocean, and the North Sea.

MAIN WONDERS TO VISIT IN SCOTLAND Medieval castles, particularly fascinating in Scotland – there are over 3,000. Scotland is the land of castles, which amaze and excite visitors with their tales of past lives and loves. The Highlands, a mountainous area with a lot of sheep and deer but not many people. The mountains are not very high, but they are really spectacular. It is a spectacularly scenic area with dense pine forests, picturesque waterfalls, wonderful wilderness and the rare wildlife. Loch Ness, a very big and mysterious lake. A legend tells about a mysterious monster, Nessie, in the depths of the water. The Isle of Skye, the largest of the Inner Hebrides with its misty mountains. Skye is situated off the West Coast of Scotland and it is famous for its scenery and landscapes that take breath away. The island has a rich history covering many topics, such as dinosaur fossils. Otters, seals, whales, dolphins and red deer are just some of the impressive creatures that can be seen on and around the Isle of Skye.

FAMOUS PEOPLE BORN IN SCOTLAND William Wallace is one of the most famous Scots together with Sean Connery, Walter Scott, Arthur Conan Doyle, J. K. Rowling and Alexander Fleming. J.K Rowling is famous for writing the literary saga of Harry Potter. William Wallace is considered the Scottish national hero. Consolidated popular vision often describes Wallace as a "person of the people". Alexander Fleming is universally known for having discovered the enzyme lysozyme in 1922 and penicillin in 1928, a result that earned him the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1945.

Edinburgh is a city in the United Kingdom, capital of Scotland since 1437 and home to its new parliament since 1999. It is the second largest city in Scotland by population after Glasgow and the seventh largest in the United Kingdom by population. Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and the third largest in the United Kingdom. It is located on the river Clyde, in the central-western lowlands of the country. Its inhabitants are called Glasvegians (in English Glaswegians).

The term Presbyterianism refers to the form of organization of the Christian church that arises above all from the Calvinist reform and which provides for the application of the model considered new to the local Christian community. St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and St. Andrew’s Day is on 30th November. St. Andrew’s Cross is the national flag: a white cross on a blue background.
